I have been out of guild wars for a while and am just getting back into it. I stopped playing right before nightfall released. My question is about inscriptions. Are these for nightfall only characters? Can I get them from drops in prophecies or factions? Also what exactly are they? they seem to be an extra mod attached to weapons but they are salvagable (sp). Any help is appreciated

First, welcome back.

Inscriptions only "drop" as part of some items (weapons and offhands) found in NF. Inscriptions do not drop stand-alone. You may (expert) salvage inscriptions off of items, similar to the way you may (expert) salvage a string off a bow for example.

Inscriptions may only be applied to items that are inscribable (have an inscription slot, the item text has something like "Inscription: ...") Applying a new inscription to an item that already has an inscription overwrites the old inscription.

Given the above points, you may not add inscriptions to items from Prophecies or Factions (since they have no inscription slot.)

Now for the "what are inscriptions" question. Remember "inherent mods" from Prophecies and Factions items, like 15>50, energy +5, etc.? Inscriptions replace those on *some* items from Nightfall (again, only items with "Inscription: ..." in the item text.)

Inscriptions and inscribable weapons may be used by any character from any chapter. If you don't have NF, then the only way you'll be able to get inscribable weapons and inscriptions is through trading with other players.

You didn't ask this, but you might also need to be aware of insignia. Remember the inherent bonuses of armor in Tyria and Prophecies (like extra health, energy, armor, etc.)? Armor from NF comes with absolutely no inherent bonuses. You add (and can later change if you like) the inherent bonuses using armor insignia. Insignia drop from some armor drops in NF. The rune trader NPC's carry insignia as well as runes now. No armor crafted in Tyria or Cantha is insignable! Don't buy insignia for a character that can not get Elonian or new Obsidian armor.

There may be some Wintersday weapons that can take inscriptions. There's nothing confirmed on this yet.

That's the current state of things. There are many threads in both Riverside and Sardelac regarding opinions and requests for both inscriptions and insignia, but no news from ANet on what, if any, changes will be made to the current situation.
